Discover Spondon week

A week-long series of special events is being plan in and around Spondon during June to showcase the rich variety of life in the area and to give the Spondon community another opportunity to come together for the celebration.

Running from Friday 21st to Saturday 29th June, the Discover Spondon week will include entertainment, walks around the area and a village-wide Treasure Hunt.

A highlight of the week will be a special "Spondon Day" on Saturday 22nd June, when the village centre will come alive with outdoor stalls from local businesses, street entertainment, a free open air concert, evenign events in Spondon's pubs and much more.

The week will also incorporate the annual Midsummer Ramble, hosted by Spondon Community Association, and also ties in with the 60th anniversary celebrations of Asterdale Primary School as well. The full list of events and activities confirmed for the week so far are:

Friday 21st June

The SCA Midsummer ramble
The annual SCA Midsummer Ramble starts as usual from the Vernon Arms at 7pm.  The 8 mile walk pauses at Dale Abbey and Ockbrook for refreshment before returning to Spondon. It is one of the walks in the new book, “Exploring Spondon”.

Saturday 22nd June

SPONDON DAY starting from 11am:

  • The village centre (Sitwell Street, Chapel Street, Chapel Side etc) will feature stalls from local traders and producers, street musicians and entertainers.
  • There'll be a free open air concert by Hothouse Jazz at 4pm.
  • Vintage cars in the Liberal Club car park
  • Bouncy Castle, Woody's Wings and other kids entertainment behind the Village Hall
  • Spondon Bazaar stall at the front of the Village Hall selling all kinds of Spondon merchandise
  • Beer festival in some of the village pubs

Tuesday 25th June

Canal walk
Derby & Sandiacre Canal Trust lead a 3 mile, 4.8 kilometre walk to explore the route of the old canal between Spondon and the city centre and discover remaining traces, plus an explanation of the planned restoration. From the finish point, it is a short walk to the bus station where a number of routes are available to return to the start point.  Meet outside Moon Hotel, Station Road, Spondon at 7.30pm. Finishes at the Alexandra Hotel.

Friday 28th June

Asterdale School diamond jubilee party.
Existing staff and parents plus all former pupils and staff are invited to Join the 60th anniversary celebrations at this special evening event at the school. Over 18s only. Full details here.

Saturday 29th June

Spondon Treasure Hunt
Join Spondon Village Improvement Committee on Saturday 29th for a 1 mile, 1.6 kilometre walk (if you solve all the clues) to test your brains and knowledge of Spondon village centre with this cryptic treasure hunt.  Remember to bring a pen or pencil!  Meet outside Spondon Village Hall on Sitwell Street between 11am and 11.45am. Completed entries to the Malt Shovel pub on between 12 noon and 2pm when the results will be announced and a “modest” prize awarded to the winner.
