The Safari has run for several years now and, having originally started out visiting gardens, it has progressed to a social event where participants run an event of their own choice and raise funds for their favourite charity plus the Spondon Village Improvement Committee.

This year's 'Safari Stops' include an evening of 1940s music, champagne breakfasts, arts & crafts and a celebration of 100 years of Cub Scouts, together with a huge variety of different stalls plus yummy home-baked cakes and other goodies, cream teas and BBQs. This year's event is officially opened by the Mayor of Derby outside The Homestead on Saturday 16th at 10.30am. The weekend also rounds off at the Homestead too with the popular Sunday afternoon BBQ in the grounds of the house.

The Spondon Social Safari is a fun, social event with many participants taking part year after year. Last year, there were 24 participating venues which received hundreds of visitors from Spondon and beyond and raised a total of more than £5,000 for the various chosen good causes.

This year’s event is being organised by Melanie Griffiths, who is keen to involve as many participants as possible. Mel said: “The Safari is not about pristine gardens or patios but very much a community social event with the emphasis on a social atmosphere, entertaining with a cup of tea or perhaps sharing a hobby you have.”

“Give it a go - it’s a great community event that raises funding for your own favourite charity and also the Village Improvement Committee – funding which is used to support maintain and improve the gardens and planters in and around the village.”

“We do however have a serious problem regarding the ongoing organisation of the Safari. It’s a brilliant fundraiser - last year over £5,200 was raised – but the ongoing continuation of the event is in jeopardy unless we can get help to organise the current event and for the future. If you are that sort of person(s) we need you.”

Mel is keen to hear from people looking to participate in future Social Safaris, either as one of the ‘safari stops’ or from anyone keen to lend a hand in organising the event.
