Big improvement works for Sitwell Street

Footpaths in the heart of the village shopping centre on Sitwell Street are being completely renewed over 6 weekends starting from 9pm on Saturday 16 February and concluding on Sunday 24th March.

Street furniture will be improved and new seating, cycle racks and a waste bin will be added. Work will be carried out in sections from the Village Hall, right through to Moor Street resulting in a massive improvement to the pedestrian safety and appearance of our Village.

Expected disruption

Works are to be carried out from 9pm on Saturday evenings until 11pm Sunday night for the next six weekends. Work is also scheduled from 9.30am until 11pm on Monday 18th Feb during school half term.

Diversions for cars will be in place during all closures with bus routes also being diverted for the first weekend only.

Inevitably, due to the extent and location of the works, there will be some disruption and inconvenience to traffic, bus services, residents and traders using the village. The contractors, Council, Neighbourhood Board, Bus Operators and Traders are making every effort to minimise the problems that may arise as a result of road closures and diversions that will be necessary.

Works will be carried out mainly at night time and during Sundays. Detailed signage and diversions will be posted in advance and throughout the area. Full details will be circulated as far as possible in advance and progress of the works will be continually monitored.

As the closures do not take effect until 9pm each Saturday night, all Spondon shops and businesses on Sitwell Street and surrounding roads will be open as usual on Saturdays and access to Sitwell Street will be as normal during Saturday daytimes.

It's hoped though that the works and resulting disruption will be well worth it as Spondon's village centre gets a well deserved makeover to ensure it remains a place everyone in Spondon can be proud of and enjoy shopping around.

Works are to be carried out under road closures at:
1. Sitwell Street, between Lodge Lane North and Moor Street
2. Moor Street, at its junction with Sitwell Street.
3. Chapel Street, at its junction with Sitwell Street.

Diversion Routes will be:
Ilkeston bound traffic via Church Street – Locko Road – Sancroft Road.
Derby Bound traffic via Stoney Lane – Gravel Pit Lane – South Avenue - Willowcroft Road.
